Subj:    Portable Cranes for Carrier Use - BuShips Cognizance

1.         The following summary regarding portable cranes developed by the Bureau for handling crashed planes on aircraft carriers is offered for information.

(a) Cranes developed and in use are as follows:
Le Touneau Model E- Used on CVL29 and all CVs except CV4
Le Touneau Model H- Used on CVE30 only
(CVE-30 USS Charger was used as a training carrier during the war and it is presumed the more capable H type was used to more quickly clear the deck of training accidents)
Le Touneau Model C-M0l(Modified) Used on CVE105 Class

(b) Cranes being developed are as follows: Le Touneau Large Screw Crane  For use on CVB41 Class Le Touneau Small Screw Crane  for use on CVEs aad CVLs(see Note l)

Note 1. Kerry Krane is now used on CVL's aad CVE's other then the vessels listed ia paragraph 1(a) above to assist in recovery of crashes. It is Bureau's decision not to supply to CVE's and CVL's a larger crane than Karry Krane unless specifically requested by the vesssl. The new Le Tourneau smail screw crane any be acceptable for use on CVL's and CVE's in lieu of Karry Krane.

2.         All carrier portable cranes are designed to lift and transport their rated load and are furnished with necessary power units. With the exception of Le Touneau Model " E " crane which is designed for use on the flight deck only, all other models are designed for use on hangar as well as on the flight deck. Le Touneau Model "D", C-201 aad new large and small screw cranes also have separate hook which travels to the water line and permits handling small loads from over the sids of the carriers.

3.         Portable cranes are designed to meet limiting wheel loads on the flight decks of the carriers when supporting their maximum load at designed outreach. These cranes are also designed to provide required stability transporting the designed load.
