     1.    Reports from forces afloat indicate that the hangar-space lighting is unsatisfactory due to frequent interruptions of light caused by traffic of ship's personnel. Further, to simplify the darkened ship installation, to provide suitable arrangement for dark adaption red lighting in Aviator's Ready Rooms, and to provide satisfactory low level illumination in the hangar space in the hangar space (SIC. I did not repeat that twice; the original report did!) in place of present unsatisfactory illumination from red bulkhead fixtures, the Bureau conducted an investigation and made trial installations of lighting fixtures and light labyrinths on the CVl6 and CV17 with the aid of the ship's and Navy Yard Boston Personnel. As a result of this study the Bureau desires the following modifications be made on the subject vessels:

     2.    Light Labyrinth for Hangar Space :

To minimize interruption of hangar lighting due to the traffic of ship's personnel, the installation of six light labyrinths is desired at the following locations:

  (a)   Main deck to gallery deck at frames 39 to 41 starboard
  (b) Gallery deck frame 39 port
  (c) Main deck to gallery deck at frames 64 to 67 port
  (d) Main deck to gallery deck at frames 105 to 107 port
  (e) Main deck to gallery deck at frames 128 to 131 port
  (f) Main deck to gallery deck at frames 181 to 184 port

All light labyrinth interiors and the deck within a radius of 20 feet of the light labyrinth opening shall be painted with a thin finish coat of dull black Navy formula #13 paint. (I haven't seen any evidence that the black on the deck surrounding lasted long)

The material to be used for the construction of light labyrinth shall be of the lightest sheet steel suitable for the installation.

     3.    Red Lighting for Hangar Space :

Eight overhead red lights should be installed in the forward hangar section, ten in the amidship hangar section, and eight in the after hangar section. These fixtures should be installed in accordance with the arrangement as shown on enclosure (A).

     (g)    Fixtures shall be type JJ-S Bureau 9-S-4853-L Alt. 5. Each fixture shall include a black metal louvre designed to prevent direct light from the fixture extending beyond the structure of the vessel. Louvres which are considered satisfactory for the purpose are being procured by the Bureau and will be shipped 1 July, 1943. The JJ-S fixtures and wiring shall be installed and connected immediately and louvres applied when available.

     (h)    A clear, red, steam-tight globe 9-S-2034-L Type H-1 shall be provided with each fixture.

     (i)    Equip each fixture with a 50-watt inside frosted rough-service lamp, Navy type TR-12.
