ATLANTIC FLEET LETTER 3L-43

To  : ATLANTIC FLEET.
 
Subject: Paints and Painting.
 
Reference:   (a)  General Specification - Appendix 6 - Instructions for Painting and Cementing Vessels of the Unites States Navy - Edition of June 1943

     1.      No paint shall be carried aboard ship while at sea, except in the following vessels:

(a)  Tenders
(b) Repair Ships
(c) Stores ships - cargo Paint
(d) Cargo Ships - cargo paint
(e) Survey Vessels - as necessary for painting buoys, beacons, etc.
(f) Aircraft carriers - 150 gallons of aircraft paints and thinners, exclusive of xylene.
(g) Auxiliary aircraft carriers - 60 gallons of aircraft paints and thinners, exclusive of xylene.

     2.      Ships of this fleet shall vigorously prosecute the removal of thick films of paint to bare metal. Pminting of bare metal shall be in accordance with instructions contained in reference (a).

     3.      Repainting shall be reduced to a minimum and shall be for the purpose of preventing corrosion and providing preservation.

     4.      Painting, when practicable, shall be accomplished by the use of spray equipment and with the assistance of experleneed paintere of navy yard, other shore activity, repair ship and tender personnel.
