Subject: Distinguishing Mark for Aircraft Carriers.
 
Reference:    (a)  CinCPac Secret ltr. S28-4, Serial 006515, dated 22 August 1945.
 
Enclosures: (A)  Photograph of numerals painted on RANDOLPH, (CV-15).

     1.      Reference (a) authorized combat aircraft carriers to paint distinguishing marks on their stacks or island structures.

     2.      Aircraft carriers of the following classes are directed to paint ship's numbers eight (8) feet high on their structures as indicated below and illustrated in enclosure (A):

CVB Class -  On the top center of stack structure, port and starboard.
 
CV-9 Class -  On port side of stack, top after portion. On starboard side of structure housing the aerological balloon room.
 
CVE-26 Class -  On the after starboard side of island with base of numerals two (2) feet above the flight deck level.
 
CVE-55 and 105 Class -  On after starboard side of island with the base of numerals at flight deck level.
 
CVL-22 and 48 Class -  On the after starboard side of island with the base of the numeral at flight deck level.

     3.      Numerals shall be of the modified vertical block type, painted with outside white No. 6, work to be performed by , shipfs force, tender, or with, yard assistance
