PACIFIC FLEET MAINTENANCE LETTER NO. 9-42

From: Fleet Maintenance Officer.
To: PACIFIC FLEET.
 
Subject: Non-Skid Deck Covering.
 
Reference: (a) Buships Spec. 52D9.

     1.      To replace linoleum, link-block rubber matting, and other deck coverings removed in the Interests of fire prevention, there is under procurement new non-skid deck covering material, reference (a), of which "Ferrox" is typical. As soon as it is available, it shall be applied to metal decks in the following locations:

(a) Damage Control traffic routes on all decks.

(b) Bridges, open and enclosed.

(c) Walkways.

(d) Deck areas in vicinity of guns.

(e) Sanitary spaces (washrooms and heads).

(f) Food preparation spaces.

     2.      To insure satisfactory adhesion, installations will be made by navy yards and tenders rather than by ship's force. Patching material is inflammable, and will not be carried aboard ship. To minimize smoke and fire hazard, coatings will be limited to 1/32 inch in thickness.
