Camouflage Painting of Ships.
(a) ATLANTIC FLEET CONFIDENTIAL LETTER 3CL-42.

1. Previous instructions, except reference (a), as to camouflage painting of ships of this Fleet are hereby cancelled.
2. Major task force commanders, and task group commanders whose immediate senior is the Commander in Chief are hereby authorized to have the ships under their command painted in accordance with any measure prescribed in reference (b).
NOTE: Specified mixing proportions of white base paint and tinting material may be altered somewhat to obtain desired blue^a'ay colors.
3. Unless directed otherwise as authorized above, ships of this Fleet will paint in accordance with camouflage instructions contained in reference (b) as follows:

(a) Submarines - Measure 9.
NOTE: Submarines engaged in school or experimental service may at the discretion of Commander Submarines retain white identification numbers on conning towers.
(b) Surface ships, except CONSTELLATION (I\20) - measure 12, using Navy Blue paint in lieu of Sea Blue paint.
NOTE: Present instructions for adding tinting material to white base to obtain Navy Blue paint are contained in reference (c). \
4. Boats shall be painted same color as the vicinity in which .they are secured for sea and shall not show any ship designation. For the present, barges may be continued with their distinctive painting provided that suitably-painted covers are provided fok^sea.
